about
This folk-rock song is based on a single chord progression that is similar to the prechorus of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” and as a whole reminded our drummer Paul of America’s “A Horse With No Name.” The lyrics were inspired both by watching Game of Thrones and by thinking about contemporary gun violence, especially an active shooter safety video that I’d seen at work that emphasized these strategies, in order: run, hide, fight. The imagery is, in part, of a cold winter landscape that feels very Minnesotan or Upper Midwestern. It’s the only one of our songs thus far that features all three main lead singers (me, Rosie, Beth) singing a lead part.
As is the case with a number of my songs, I dreamed it in part. My notes from that dream are as follows, edited for clarity:
6.1.19 - another dream song. I am watching the band (our band), but I could only see Rosie in the view; Beth was on stage, too, but not in view. Rosie was playing bass and fumbling a bit with the strap that was making it not work for her; she sped up the bass part (and song), comically, then stopped the song, took the strap off, smiled at the audience (embarrassed and amused), and started over. They were singing the chorus together and playing, I couldn’t quite make out the words: “I ain’t gonna [? - /eye/] on an open [? - /a/]?” in the dream, it was Eb F d Eb.
lyrics
Not for an hour
That’s falling away
Not for a winter
And never for a day
Not for a year
When everything turns gray
Not out of fear
Of whatever comes that may
I ain’t gonna ride on an open plain
I ain’t gonna fight on an open plain
I ain’t gonna hide on an open plain today
I ain’t gonna ride on an open plain
I ain’t gonna fight on an open plain
I ain’t gonna hide on an open plain today
Not when the sun
Is coming to stay
Not one for runnin’
To jump into the fray
Not when the forest
Gives way to the grain
Not when the chorus
Sings out in pain
I ain’t gonna ride on an open plain
I ain’t gonna fight on an open plain
I ain’t gonna hide on an open plain today
I ain’t gonna ride on an open plain
I ain’t gonna fight on an open plain
I ain’t gonna die on an open plain today
Not this tomorrow
Not again and again
Not so much sorrow
From way back when
Not when the coal’s
Left out in the rain
Not when my goals
Were all in vain
I ain’t gonna ride on an open plain
I ain’t gonna fight on an open plain
I ain’t gonna hide on an open plain today
I ain’t gonna ride on an open plain
I ain’t gonna fight on an open plain
I ain’t gonna die on an open plain today
